About CalcStep
Our Mission
At CalcStep, our mission is simple: provide students, educators, shoppers, engineers, and researchers with completely free, high-precision mathematical calculators that deliver transparent, step-by-step solutions without subscription paywalls, unnecessary cookies, or inaccurate floating-point shortcuts.
Who We Are
CalcStep was designed and founded by JR JIJAN, a software engineer passionate about mathematical computing and educational equity. Frustrated by commercial calculator websites cluttered with misleading popup ads, inaccurate rounding, and hidden paywalls for basic step breakdowns, JR JIJAN built CalcStep to serve as an evergreen, zero-maintenance public reference.
How We Build and Test Our Calculators
Most basic online calculators rely on native JavaScript IEEE-754 floating-point arithmetic. While fast, standard binary floating-point representation frequently produces notorious glitches—such as 0.1 + 0.2 evaluating to 0.30000000000000004. In financial discount calculations, medical dosage scaling, and multi-term fractional operations, such discrepancies can cause real errors.
To ensure uncompromising accuracy, CalcStep follows strict engineering principles:
- Arbitrary-Precision Decimal Engine: We utilize exact 35-digit precision via
decimal.jsfor all decimal operations, ensuring accurate half-away-from-zero commercial rounding. - Native BigInt Fractions: Fraction reductions and Greatest Common Divisors (GCD) utilize native
BigIntintegers, allowing exact prime reductions with zero decay across arbitrarily large numbers. - Automated Unit Test Suites: Every calculator is subjected to extensive automated unit testing using Vitest, validating edge cases including zero denominators, negative percentages, extreme numbers, and boundary rounding conditions.
- Algorithm-Driven Step Working: The explanatory steps displayed in our "Show steps" panels are generated dynamically by the calculation function itself, ensuring complete transparency between the formula and the final output.
Editorial and Independence Policy
All calculator tools, formulas, worked examples, and written guides on CalcStep are created independently for educational and practical reference. We do not accept sponsored editorial placements, and our software recommendations in the suggested tools directory are based solely on product reputation, utility, and standing in the mathematical community.
